JUST IN : Nigeria army rescues Benue buffaloes after kidnapping incident

The Nigeria Army has successfully rescued the Benue Buffaloes handball team after they were kidnapped while returning from Lagos following their participation in the Ardova Handball Premier League 2025 Phase 2, which concluded last Friday, Sport360NG reports.

According to the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), the team, who finished ninth in the league, was abducted by armed men shortly after passing Otukpo in Benue State. Prompt intervention by the army ensured the safe release of the players, coaches, and officials, averting what could have been a far more serious situation.

HFN President Jibril Ojih expressed deep sympathy to the team, describing the ordeal as “a sad and heartbreaking experience that no athlete, coach, or official should ever face.” He also commended the army for their swift and effective response.

“I extend my deepest sympathy to the entire Benue Buffaloes team. What they endured is unimaginable, and we thank God and the Nigeria Army for their safe rescue,” Ojih said in a statement on Monday.

He further extended condolences to the Benue State Sports Ministry, acknowledging the emotional and psychological impact on the state’s sporting community. “Our hearts go out to the Benue State Sports Ministry. The board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria and the entire Nigeria handball family stands with you during this trying time,” he added.

Ojih also called for improved safety measures for travelling sports teams, stressing that athlete welfare must be a national priority. He reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to supporting the Benue Buffaloes as they recover from the ordeal.

“We will stand by the team and ensure they receive all the support they need as they heal and prepare for future competitions,” he said.

The incident has highlighted the security risks faced by sports teams on the road, underlining the importance of robust protection and rapid response mechanisms to safeguard athletes and officials nationwide.
