Gomis Strike Seals Narrow Win for Senegal Over Nigeria in CHAN Opener
Senegal began their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) title defence with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nigeria in a fiercely contested Group D encounter on Tuesday in Zanzibar, Sport360NG reports.
Christian Gomis emerged the match-winner, netting the decisive goal in the 75th minute to hand the defending champions a slim advantage in a game that showcased moments of attacking promise but was ultimately defined by intensity and discipline.
Making their first CHAN appearance since 2018, the Super Eagles started on the front foot, with midfielders Nduka Junior and Raymond Tochukwu driving early pressure. However, both players found themselves in the referee’s book as challenges flew in during a heated opening spell.
Senegal gradually found their rhythm, keeping possession with confidence and absorbing Nigeria’s early energy. Clear-cut chances were few in the first half, though Nigeria’s Sikiru Alimi forced a decent save from goalkeeper Marc Diouf, while Daouda Ba and Moctar Koïté tested Nigeria from range.
The breakthrough arrived midway through the second half. Koïté broke free on the right flank and whipped in a low delivery, which Gomis met with a composed finish to spark jubilant celebrations from the Senegalese bench.
Nigeria pushed for an equaliser late on, introducing Vincent Temitope and Godwin Obaje to bolster the attack. Temitope came close in stoppage time, but his effort narrowly missed the target, while Alimi and Jabbar Malik threatened from set plays.
Senegal’s backline, marshalled by Seyni Ndiaye and Joseph Layousse, stood firm under sustained pressure, demonstrating the defensive solidity that has become the Teranga Lions’ trademark in CHAN competitions.
A stop-start second half, featuring numerous substitutions and injury delays, culminated in a tense finale, with Shola Adelani penalised for handball in stoppage time as frustration mounted for the Nigerians.
Despite the loss, Nigeria coach Éric Chelle remained upbeat, urging his players to remain focused ahead of key clashes with Congo and Sudan in the remaining group fixtures.
The win reinforces Senegal’s impressive record against fellow West African teams at the CHAN and marks their sixth 1-0 triumph in tournament history, a testament to their defensive resilience and tactical discipline.
Head coach Souleymane Diallo, who had earlier played down the pressure of defending the title, watched his side deliver a composed and professional performance to climb to the top of Group D.
Nigeria, now bottom of the group, will hope to bounce back when they face Sudan next Tuesday at the Amaan Stadium, as they look to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
