CAF Announces Record $10.4m Prize Pool for 2024 CHAN
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a record-breaking prize fund of $10.4 million for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), marking a significant financial uplift for the biennial competition and reinforcing CAF’s commitment to growing African football, Sport360NG reports.
For the first time in the tournament’s history, the champions will take home a remarkable $3.5 million, a 75% jump from the $2 million awarded to the winners of the previous edition.
The runners-up are set to receive $1.2 million, while third and fourth-place finishers will earn $700,000 and $600,000 respectively. Quarter-finalists who fall short of the semi-finals will each be rewarded with $450,000.
Teams placing third or fourth in their group stages will also receive compensation, earning between $200,000 and $300,000 based on the group format. Meanwhile, teams finishing bottom in five-team groups will each be allocated $200,000.
In total, the prize pool will be shared among all 19 participating teams, a move aimed at encouraging competitiveness and rewarding performance at every stage of the tournament.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe highlighted the financial boost as part of a broader strategy to strengthen domestic football across the continent.
“This increase in prize money will support the development of locally based players and help strengthen the global competitiveness of African football,” Motsepe said in a statement.
He described CHAN, which is open only to players active in their national leagues, as a key platform for talent development and a driver of fan engagement and commercial interest.
“The tournament is a crucial element in our vision to make African football more attractive to fans, sponsors, and international broadcasters,” he added.
The 2024 edition of CHAN, officially known as the CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024, will make history as the first to be jointly hosted by three nations. The competition is scheduled to run from August 2 to 30, 2025.
Nineteen teams are set to participate, including defending champions Senegal, two-time winners DR Congo, and Morocco, the most successful team in CHAN history. Nigeria will also be among the contenders, returning to the tournament after missing the last edition.
The Super Eagles secured qualification with a 3–1 aggregate victory over arch-rivals Ghana and will be aiming to improve on their best performance, a runners-up finish in 2018. Under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria will be seeking their maiden CHAN title, hoping to turn domestic promise into continental triumph.
