Unfazed by American Rivals Ahead of World Championships – Ajayi

Nigeria’s fastest sprinter this year, Konyinsola Ajayi, says he remains confident and undaunted by the impressive form of several American stars tipped to challenge for the 100m crown at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Sport360NG reports.

Ranked 13th globally in 2025, Ajayi is among the select few Nigerians to have secured qualification for the championships, which are scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21 in Japan. His spot was secured following a strong outing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he advanced to the semi-finals in the men’s 100m.

The 20-year-old made a return to Nigerian soil last weekend to participate in the national trials in Lagos. However, he opted out of the 100m final as a precautionary move to avoid injury.

While the trials were ongoing, across the Atlantic, American sprinter Kenny Bednarek claimed the U.S. national title with a blistering personal best of 9.79 seconds. Several other American runners also posted sub-10 second times, reinforcing the depth of talent in their ranks.

Despite their performances, Ajayi remains unfazed.

“I saw the times they ran, but it doesn’t shake me,” he said. “It’s one thing to run fast when I’m not there. But when I’m in the race with you, it’s a different ball game. You’ll have to prove it all over again. The World Championships will be exciting, just keep praying we all stay healthy.”

Ajayi burst into Nigeria’s sub-10-second club in April at the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida, clocking 9.96s (+1.9 m/s) to open his outdoor season in style. He continued his fine form in July, matching his personal best of 9.92s to win the 100m title at the Meeting International Sotteville-lès-Rouen in France.

While only three American athletes, along with reigning world champion Noah Lyles, will feature in Tokyo, the competition will also include standout names such as Letsile Tebogo, Kishane Thompson, Oblique Seville, and Akani Simbine, all formidable contenders for the world title.
