Nigeria’s rising sprint star Kanyinsola Ajayi will face the ultimate test on Tuesday, August 12, when he lines up against Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, the current world’s fastest man, in the men’s 100m at the Gyulai István Memorial, Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix, Sport360NG reports.

Ajayi, enjoying a breakout season on the global stage, will compete in Budapest in one of the most competitive fields ever assembled for the event. Thompson, who leads the 2024 World Athletics rankings with a blistering 9.75 seconds, holds the fastest time in the world over the past decade.

The men’s 100m, set to close the meeting, is part of the prestigious World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series. Every international entrant has dipped under the 10-second mark, promising a high-octane contest for the 20-year-old Nigerian.

Among the elite challengers are South Africa’s Akani Simbine, African record-holder Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya, Ghana’s national record-holder AbdulRasheed Saminu, and experienced Americans Ronnie Baker and Chris Coleman. Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake and Rohan Watson, along with Hungarian champion Dominik Illovszky, round out the star-studded line-up.

Ajayi has been in electrifying form this year, producing four sub-10-second runs in the past four months. He matched his personal best of 9.92 seconds in July at the Meeting International Sotteville-lès-Rouen in France, adding to his earlier 9.96-second victory at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida.

The Nigerian champion reached the semi-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics and currently sits 13th on the global 100m rankings for the season. His performances have already secured him a place at the World Championships in Tokyo this September, where he will look to solidify his status among the world’s sprinting elite.

The Budapest clash offers another golden opportunity for Ajayi to test himself against the very best, and perhaps deliver another career-defining performance in what has been a remarkable year.
