Amusan Leads Nigerian Charge at Diamond League in Poland

World record holder Tobi Amusan will spearhead Nigeria’s challenge at the 12th leg of the Diamond League in Silesia, Poland, on Saturday, as four athletes from the country continue their bid to reach the season-ending finals in Zurich, Sport360NG reports.

Amusan, who recently claimed her fifth national title in Lagos, is targeting a fourth career Diamond Trophy. The 100m hurdles star is set for her sixth Diamond League outing this year, having won in Rabat back in May, clocked a season’s best 12.24s in Paris, and finished second in Oregon in July with 12.38s.

Ranked 10th in the world, she currently sits second in the Diamond League standings for her event with 17 points, trailing leader Grace Stark of the USA (35 points) and narrowly ahead of Dutch hurdler Nadine Visser. A top finish in Silesia could seal her qualification for Zurich. She will face stiff competition from world number three Masai Russell (USA), fourth-ranked Ackera Nugent (Jamaica), and reigning world champion Danielle Williams (Jamaica).

Also representing Nigeria is Favour Ofili, who will compete in the women’s 200m for the first time this Diamond League season. The sprinter, bound for Turkey, is 17th in the 100m rankings with four points after finishing fifth in her debut at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon. Still without a ranking in the 200m, she will take on a stacked field including US world number one Brittany Brown, Britain’s fifth-ranked Daryll Neita, and Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, the second-fastest woman ever over the distance.

In the men’s 400m hurdles, Ezekiel Nathaniel returns to Diamond League action for just the second time as a professional. The 22-year-old, fresh off an impressive collegiate campaign in the United States that earned him a Bowerman Award finalist spot, finished third in Oregon in 47.88s to collect six points and place 15th in the standings. He will race against Norway’s Karsten Warholm, the Olympic champion and world record holder, Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba, and Jamaica’s Roshawn Clarke.

Men’s shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will also be in action, aiming to strengthen his case for a spot in Zurich. The African record holder sits sixth in the standings with nine points after his landmark throw of 22.10m in Oregon, a new Nigerian and continental best. His rivals in Silesia include Italy’s world number two Leonardo Fabbri and US star Joe Kovacs, ranked third globally.

With just three meetings left before the finals on 27–28 August, only 64 athletes worldwide have secured their places in Zurich. The Diamond League champions will claim the prestigious trophy along with a share of the $2.24m prize pool.
