Wales 8 (8) – Try: Callender; Pen: Bevan, Sport360NG reports.

Scotland made the perfect start to their World Cup campaign with a commanding 38-8 triumph over Wales, running in six tries to seal their biggest-ever win against their Celtic rivals.

Despite weeks of off-field uncertainty surrounding player contracts, Scotland delivered a united display in front of 10,054 supporters in Salford, the largest attendance for a fixture between the two nations. Francesca McGhie stole the show with a hat-trick, while Leia Brebner-Holden, Evie Gallagher and Emma Orr also crossed the whitewash.

Alex Callender’s first-half try briefly kept Wales in touch, but once Scotland hit their stride, the visitors had no answer. Keira Bevan’s penalty was the only other score Sean Lynn’s side could muster as the hosts pulled away after the break to record a 30-point winning margin.

The result was especially sweet for Scotland, who were heartbroken by a last-gasp Welsh penalty in their World Cup opener three years ago. This time, Bryan Easson’s side left nothing to chance and now sit in a strong position to progress to the quarter-finals. Wales, meanwhile, face a daunting task against second-ranked Canada if they are to keep their knockout hopes alive.

Lightning start

Scotland wasted no time in laying down a marker. Within the opening minute, McGhie showcased her pace out wide, capitalising on missed tackles to open the scoring. Wales’ shaky start continued with a misfiring line-out and a scrum penalty, while full-back Nel Metcalfe struggled under the high ball.

Wales responded through Callender, who powered over from a rolling maul after a well-placed kick to the corner by Lleucu George. But parity didn’t last long. McGhie struck again, finishing a flowing attack after Scotland’s midfield carries pulled the Welsh defence apart.

Bevan slotted a penalty to narrow the gap, while winger Jasmine Joyce-Butchers threatened with a dazzling 40-metre run that was snuffed out by Scotland’s scramble defence. McGhie then turned provider, launching a break from inside her own half that led to Brebner-Holden’s score, giving Scotland a firm grip on the contest before half-time.

Relentless second half

Any hopes of a Welsh fightback evaporated moments after the restart when George’s clearance was charged down, handing Scotland another attacking platform. Quick hands in the backline released McGhie for her third try of the evening.

Coach Lynn turned to his bench early, introducing heavy hitters including Sisilia Tuipulotu and Carys Phillips, but Scotland’s dominance at set-piece and in open play continued. Crabb’s yellow card for a high tackle compounded Welsh frustrations.

Gallagher marked her World Cup debut with Scotland’s fifth try after a powerful scrum, before Orr added the final flourish two minutes from time. The score was initially questioned for a forward pass, but replays confirmed the try, sealing Wales’ heaviest defeat to Scotland.

Several Welsh players were left in tears at full-time after a result that few had anticipated. Scotland, however, will head into their next clash with Fiji brimming with confidence.
