Spurs punish unsettled City as Trafford struggles on Etihad debut

Tottenham Hotspur once again left the Etihad with smiles, claiming a 2-0 win over Manchester City in a result that raised fresh questions over Pep Guardiola’s goalkeeping plans, Sport360NG reports.

Just nine months after a stunning 4-0 victory in Manchester, Spurs returned to exploit City’s uncertainty at the back. This time, it was two first-half goals, one from exploiting City’s high line and another from a James Trafford error, that sealed the points for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The travelling Spurs supporters, who know the sting of the “it’s happened again” taunt from rivals, gleefully turned it back on City at the final whistle.

Trafford’s afternoon to forget

Guardiola opted to start Trafford ahead of long-time No.1 Ederson, who was on the bench amid rumours of interest from Galatasaray. But the 22-year-old endured a difficult first outing at the Etihad.

The England youth international, signed back from Burnley for £27m after keeping 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season, looked nervous throughout. He was fortunate to escape punishment for a rash collision with Mohammed Kudus and was later culpable for Spurs’ second goal, misplacing a short pass that Ruben Dias failed to control before Joao Palhinha pounced to score.

City never recovered, sliding to defeat in their opening home fixture of the campaign.

Guardiola faces a decision

Guardiola defended his choice to stick with Trafford after a strong display at Wolves on the opening weekend, insisting:

“The keeper is a special position… but in these first weeks, everybody will play.”

Yet the situation leaves the City boss with a major decision. Should Ederson remain, he offers proven reliability. If the Brazilian departs, Paris St-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma is reportedly a possible replacement, For now, though, City look unsettled.
“If it’s a choice between Trafford and Ederson, I’m going with Ederson. Trafford was poor for the second goal, that killed them.”

Youthful City exposed

Saturday’s starting XI was Guardiola’s youngest ever in the Premier League, with an average age just under 25. While signs of promise are there, their inexperience was evident against a well-drilled Spurs team led by the relentless pressing of Richarlison.

Former midfielder Leon Osman suggested the result offered perspective:

“There was a lot of talk after week one that this City side were back. This makes people step back and reassess. Spurs were simply sharper and stronger.”

City may have time to put things right, but Guardiola’s goalkeeping dilemma looms large as the champions attempt to reassert their authority.
