Angela Mortimer Barrett, who captured the Wimbledon women’s singles title in 1961, has died at the age of 93, Sport360NG reports.

Born in Plymouth, Mortimer Barrett enjoyed a decorated career, collecting three Grand Slam singles crowns in addition to a Wimbledon doubles title with Anne Shilcock in 1955. Her singles triumphs came at the French Championships in 1955, the Australian Championships in 1958, and at Wimbledon three years later. She was also runner-up at the All England Club in 1958, losing to American trailblazer Althea Gibson.

Her achievements were all the more remarkable given the obstacles she faced. She competed despite partial hearing loss and famously overcame a painful bout of tennis elbow during her 1961 Wimbledon campaign, where she defeated fellow Briton Christine Truman 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the final.

Known on court as Angela Mortimer, she married John Barrett, himself a British tennis player who later became a respected commentator and writer, in 1967, the same year she was awarded an MBE for services to the sport.

Debbie Jevans, chair of the All England Club, paid tribute, describing her as a figure of “determination and extraordinary dedication.” She added: “An honorary member since her 1961 victory, Angela has been a familiar and valued presence for more than 60 years. Her passing leaves a gap in the fabric of the club, and she will be deeply missed. On behalf of everyone at the All England Club, I extend heartfelt condolences to her husband John, their children Michael and Sarah Jane, their grandchildren, and all her family and friends.”

In recognition of her impact on the game, Mortimer Barrett was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1993. Her husband joined her in that honour two decades later, in 2014.
