Chelsea agree £40m deal to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United
Chelsea have struck a £40m agreement with Manchester United for forward Alejandro Garnacho, bringing an end to the Argentine’s time at Old Trafford, Sport360NG reports.
The 21-year-old, who was told by United boss Ruben Amorim to find a new club at the end of last season, becomes the Blues’ latest attacking addition under Enzo Maresca. The deal also includes a 10% sell-on clause, making Garnacho the club’s fourth most expensive sale after Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Ángel Di María.
United had initially sought around £60m for the winger, but Chelsea’s persistence helped lower the final fee. Garnacho had held talks with the London side in January and made Stamford Bridge his preferred destination.
Chelsea’s transfer balance
Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s takeover in 2022, Chelsea have spent more than £500m on wide players alone, a figure that climbs to over £650m when strikers are included. However, significant outgoings mean the club expect to balance their books this summer.
Christopher Nkunku is set to join AC Milan in a deal worth an initial £32m, while Nicolas Jackson is in discussions with Bayern Munich over a loan move that could become permanent. Those sales, alongside other departures, have already helped Chelsea generate a Premier League-record £263.2m from transfers in a single summer.
The Blues were hit with a €31m (£26.7m) fine from Uefa earlier this year and must show a positive transfer balance to register new signings for the Champions League.
Garnacho’s United exit
A product of United’s academy after joining from Atlético Madrid in 2020, Garnacho made 144 senior appearances and scored 27 goals. His final outing for the club came in May’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, after which he voiced frustration at Amorim’s decision to leave him out of the starting XI.
Although he travelled on the club’s post-season tour of Asia, he was left out of the subsequent US trip and instructed to train separately alongside fellow outcasts Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford.
United, meanwhile, have already reinvested heavily in their attack this summer with the arrivals of Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, a combined outlay of around £200m.
Maresca gets his winger
For Chelsea head coach Maresca, Garnacho fills a key gap. The Italian had prioritised strengthening at centre-back and on the left wing, but the board only sanctioned the arrival of an attacker. Garnacho will compete with new signing Jamie Gittens for a starting role.
The Argentine’s representatives were spotted at Stamford Bridge back in January, underlining Chelsea’s long-standing interest. By waiting until late in the window, the club were able to negotiate the price down to £40m, a figure seen internally as strong value.
What Chelsea are buying
Energetic and hard-working, Garnacho was one of United’s best players out of possession last season, leading the squad for ball recoveries in the final third. Yet his finishing has been under scrutiny.
He managed 10 goals in all competitions in each of the past two campaigns, but converted just 7.1% of his 84 league shots last term, the fourth-worst rate among Premier League forwards with at least 50 attempts. He also scored only two of the 16 big chances presented to him.
Still, with over 140 appearances already under his belt and his best years ahead of him, Chelsea believe Garnacho can evolve into a decisive figure in their frontline.
