Another False Dawn: Mourinho Sacked as Fenerbahce Boss
Jose Mourinho has been dismissed by Fenerbahce just 14 months into his tenure, following the club’s elimination from the Champions League play-offs at the hands of Benfica, Sport360NG reports.
The Turkish side confirmed in a statement that the 62-year-old had “parted ways” with the club, later clarifying to the BBC that the decision amounted to a sacking. Mourinho is expected to receive a compensation package worth around €9m (£7.8m), with his coaching staff due an additional €2m (£1.7m), though negotiations are ongoing.
Mourinho, who has previously managed Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, guided Fenerbahce to a second-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig during his single season in charge. However, his spell was overshadowed by controversy both on and off the pitch.
He faced accusations of making racist remarks after a derby draw with Galatasaray in February, allegations he strongly denied before filing his own lawsuit for damages. He was also handed a two-match suspension for his criticism of refereeing standards and frequently clashed with the club’s hierarchy over transfer dealings.
Supporters’ hopes that Mourinho would end Fenerbahce’s 11-year wait for a league title were left unfulfilled. The team failed to lift any silverware, struggled in derbies, and performances drew increasing criticism for a lack of flair.
Speaking before the decisive tie against Benfica, Mourinho openly suggested the club had failed to show ambition in the transfer market, remarking: “If the Champions League was truly vital for the club, something would have been done between the Feyenoord and Benfica matches.”
The former Porto and Inter Milan manager, who has won the Champions League twice and claimed European honours with United and Roma, had promised when unveiled in June 2024 that Fenerbahce’s famous yellow-and-navy shirt would become his “skin.”
Instead, just over a year later, his tenure has ended without trophies, amid growing frustration from fans and board members alike. With club presidential elections looming in September, the Fenerbahce hierarchy opted to bring his tenure to an abrupt close, marking another false dawn for a club still chasing its first league crown since 2014.
