Palace step up defender search with Guehi’s future linked to Liverpool deal

Crystal Palace are working to bring in two central defenders before Monday’s transfer deadline, a move that could pave the way for Marc Guehi’s long-anticipated switch to Liverpool, Sport360NG reports.

The Premier League champions have been in discussions over a £35m deal for the England international, though Palace manager Oliver Glasner has publicly insisted that the centre-back “has to stay” at Selhurst Park beyond the window.

No agreement has yet been reached, but Liverpool have been given encouragement that Palace are open to doing business, provided they can secure replacements. Guehi, who has turned down a new contract with the club, is entering the final year of his deal, and Palace are reluctant to risk losing him on a free next summer. The south London side previously rejected a £65m offer from Newcastle for the 25-year-old.

Palace are in advanced negotiations for Toulouse’s 19-year-old defender Jaydee Canvot and are also targeting a more experienced option. Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji has been approached, although the Switzerland international is believed to be hesitant about the move.

Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande has long been Palace’s preferred choice, but the club have so far been priced out of a deal. Roma’s Evan Ndicka is also among the names being considered.

Glasner, speaking ahead of the weekend, underlined Guehi’s importance to his side. “He has to be a Palace player when the window closes,” the Austrian said. “It’s not possible to find someone who can come straight in and play at his level in the Premier League.”
