From Teen Prodigy to Veteran Star: Milner Scores 23 Years After First Premier League Goal

When James Milner struck his first Premier League goal as a 16-year-old for Leeds against Sunderland in 2002, few could have predicted he would still be finding the net in the top flight more than two decades later, Sport360NG reports.

At 39 years and 239 days, the Brighton veteran converted from the spot in a 2-1 victory over his former side Manchester City, becoming the second-oldest scorer in Premier League history. The goal also underlined his unique record of being both the division’s second-youngest and second-oldest goalscorer.

Milner’s penalty cancelled out Erling Haaland’s opener and set the stage for Brighton’s comeback. “It’s not the easiest thing, but my experience helped,” he told Sky Sports afterwards.

The strike ended a six-year league drought, his previous goal coming for Liverpool at Leicester in 2019. Remarkably, the 2,075-day wait does not even rank among the top 50 longest gaps between Premier League goals.

With 640 Premier League appearances to his name, Milner’s durability stands out. Former team-mate Joe Hart hailed the midfielder’s continued influence, saying: “He still looks fit and fresh. What a man.”

His longevity is further highlighted by the fact he has scored against goalkeepers born in four different decades, the 1960s, 1970s, 1990s and 2000s. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer described him as “an absolute legend of the game,” praising his composure under pressure.

Milner admitted he feared his career was over after injuries restricted him to just four appearances last season, but a one-year extension at Brighton has given him the chance to continue. “I thought last season might be my last,” he told Match of the Day. “It’s nice to score in a victory and I’m delighted for the boys.”

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said Milner’s presence was invaluable: “He spreads belief to others. There was pressure with the penalty, but he has dealt with moments like that throughout his career.”

After spells with Leeds, Swindon, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and now Brighton, Milner dedicated his milestone goal to former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident alongside his brother in July.

Paying tribute, he said: “He meant so much to everyone. It’s an honour to wear his number. I didn’t think I’d score many this season, but maybe that’s the magic of his number on my shirt.”
