Arsenal’s £1m Star Olivia Smith Announces Herself with Debut Thunderbolt

Arsenal’s record signing Olivia Smith needed only one flash of brilliance to justify the hype surrounding her arrival, marking her Women’s Super League debut with a spectacular goal at the Emirates, Sport360NG reports.

The Gunners, trailing newly promoted London City Lionesses after Kosovare Asllani’s penalty, were struggling to find rhythm when the 21-year-old Canadian unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner. It was the perfect response to questions about her world-record £1m price tag, and it sparked a 4-1 comeback victory in front of more than 38,000 fans.

Smith, who left Liverpool for north London in the summer, had briefly held the title of the world’s most expensive female footballer before Orlando Pride’s £1.1m signing of Lizbeth Ovalle. But she showed little sign of nerves, insisting before the season that the transfer fee was “just a number.” Her equaliser in the 29th minute backed up those words.

“That’s the kind of goal I always want to score,” Smith said afterwards. “Any time I see a bit of space, I’ll take the chance. This was a very special moment for me.”

In just over an hour on the pitch, Smith registered more shots, dribbles and touches inside the box than any other player, underlining her attacking threat. Former England star Fara Williams praised her impact on BBC One, calling the strike “phenomenal” and proof that she had “lived up to the price tag.”

Ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis went even further: “There were eyes everywhere on her today, but what a debut. That was a cannonball of a strike, a goal-of-the-season contender.”

A star in the making

Smith’s rise has been rapid. She first represented Canada at just 15, before announcing herself domestically with North Toronto Nitros, where she scored 18 goals in 11 games in 2022. A move to Sporting Lisbon followed, where her 13 goals and nine assists alerted top European clubs.

Liverpool paid a record fee of just over £200,000 to bring her to the WSL last season, and she delivered with seven goals in 20 appearances. But Arsenal’s interest, and their record-breaking offer, was decisive.

“She had such confidence with Liverpool under Matt Beard,” Brown-Finnis added. “They would have loved to keep her, but when Arsenal come calling with that kind of money, it’s difficult to resist.”

Arsenal’s missing piece?

Manager Renee Slegers was delighted with Smith’s debut, describing her strike as “fantastic individual action” and insisting she offers Arsenal “a new layer” compared to last season.

Arsenal, crowned European champions in May after defeating Barcelona, have not lifted the WSL trophy since 2019. Chelsea’s domestic dominance, six successive league titles, has kept the Gunners at bay, though Slegers insists her squad is ready to challenge again.

“If you play for Arsenal, you aim for trophies,” she said. “Olivia brings something different to this team, and we’re very happy to have her.”

Smith, meanwhile, remains focused: “I came here to learn, to grow, and to win things. That’s what drives me every day.”

If her debut is any indication, she may be the catalyst Arsenal need to finally reclaim the league crown.
