USA’s Savannah DeMelo stable after on-pitch collapse in NWSL match
United States international Savannah DeMelo is recovering in hospital after collapsing during Racing Louisville’s National Women’s Soccer League clash with Seattle Reign on Sunday, Sport360NG reports.
The 27-year-old midfielder went down in first-half stoppage time and was treated by medical staff on the field before being taken away by ambulance. The score was 0-0 at the time, and league officials later confirmed the fixture will be completed at a future date.
“Savannah is stable and alert and receiving the care she needs,” the NWSL said in a statement, adding that it was working closely with Louisville’s medical staff. “Player safety remains our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring the highest standards of medical care at every match.”
Seattle Reign also shared their support, writing on social media: “Sending all our love to Savannah DeMelo and everyone at Racing Lou FC. We stand side by side with Louisville during this time and thank our fans for their support.”
DeMelo, who has seven caps for the U.S. national team, previously left a game against Bay FC in March due to health concerns. Two months later, she revealed she had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism.
