Onana set for Trabzonspor loan move from Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana is close to sealing a loan switch to Turkish club Trabzonspor, Sport360NG reports.

The deal is not yet signed, but those close to the 29-year-old expect it to be finalised in time for him to feature against Fenerbahçe on Sunday, 14 September. With Turkey’s transfer window open until Friday, there remains sufficient time to complete the move, even as Onana is currently away on international duty with Cameroon.

The United keeper had previously been linked with Galatasaray, though the Istanbul side turned their attention to Ugurcan Cakir instead. Cakir, Turkey’s No.1 in their recent World Cup qualifying victory over Georgia, joined Galatasaray from Trabzonspor earlier this month in a transfer that could rise to €36m (£31.2m).

That exit left Trabzonspor searching for a replacement, and insiders at the club believe Onana could fill the gap effectively.

United had already been considering trimming their goalkeeping department following the deadline-day signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. While Old Trafford officials were open to carrying four senior keepers, manager Ruben Amorim has been pushing for a leaner squad, particularly with no European fixtures this season. Alongside Onana, Altay Bayindir and veteran Tom Heaton remain part of the group.

Onana ended last campaign as United’s first-choice goalkeeper, starting in the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. However, a hamstring injury early in pre-season ruled him out of summer preparations, and he lost his place for the opening three league fixtures to Bayindir.

His only appearance this term came in the EFL Cup, where he was culpable for one of the goals in a shock loss to League Two side Grimsby.

Signed for £47.2m from Inter Milan in 2023 at Erik ten Hag’s request, Onana has struggled to establish himself since replacing David de Gea. A series of costly errors saw him dropped for April’s Premier League defeat at Newcastle, although he was reinstated for United’s dramatic 5-4 Europa League quarter-final win over Lyon days later.
