Britain Trail in Billie Jean King Cup Semi-Final as Kartal Falls to Navarro
Great Britain face an uphill battle to reach the Billie Jean King Cup final after Sonay Kartal was edged out by the United States’ Emma Navarro in a tense three-set clash, Sport360NG reports.
Kartal, ranked outside the world’s top 70, made a blistering start against the 18th-ranked Navarro and appeared on course for another notable scalp when she led by a set and an early break. But the American mounted a determined recovery to seal a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory and hand her team a 1-0 lead in the semi-final.
The result leaves Katie Boulter needing to upset world No. 7 Jessica Pegula in the second singles rubber to keep Britain’s hopes alive.
Britain are competing in the last four for the third time in four years as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever title in the competition. Their opponents, by contrast, boast a record 18 championships.
Kartal’s performance began in encouraging fashion despite a nervy start. She dropped serve in a marathon opening game but quickly settled, rattling off four games in a row and taking the opening set with a combination of crisp baseline hitting and court coverage that unsettled Navarro.
Errors crept into Navarro’s game in that spell, as double faults and wayward forehands allowed Kartal to dictate rallies. The Briton underlined her growing confidence by chasing down a drop shot and firing away a smash to clinch the set in emphatic style.
Kartal twice broke early in the second set but could not consolidate either lead, with Navarro showing greater resilience and cutting down her mistakes. The American capitalised on a string of loose errors to level the match.
In the decider, both players traded breaks before Navarro seized control, winning eight points in succession to surge 5-2 ahead. Kartal saved one match point but could not resist the American’s momentum, with Navarro closing out the contest to the delight of US captain Lindsay Davenport.
