Rangers set to appoint Danny Rohl after Kevin Muscat deal collapses
Rangers are close to naming Danny Rohl as their new head coach, just days after the German appeared to withdraw from contention for the job, Sport360NG reports.
The move comes shortly after talks with Kevin Muscat broke down at an advanced stage. The former Ibrox defender, currently managing Shanghai Port in China, had emerged as a leading candidate before scheduling complications derailed negotiations. Muscat’s club remain in the Chinese Super League title race, which could extend into late November or December, delaying any possible start date in Glasgow.
Rohl, who last managed Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship, had been among the early frontrunners for the post before attention shifted to Muscat. Rangers have since revived discussions with the 35-year-old and are now confident of concluding an agreement in the coming days.
The Scottish club have been searching for a replacement for Russell Martin, who was sacked on 5 October after 17 matches in charge. Martin left with Rangers eighth in the Premiership, nine points behind Celtic and 11 adrift of leaders Hearts, and having failed to reach the Champions League group stage. His side also lost both of their Europa League fixtures.
Rangers have since slipped to sixth in the table with only one win in eight league outings and will be looking to revive their fortunes when they face Brann in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
