NPFL: Ikorodu City go top of NPFL after hard-fought win over Plateau United
Ikorodu City climbed to the summit of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League table for the first time this season after edging Plateau United 2–1 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday, Sport360NG reports.
Following a cagey opening half, Joseph Arumala broke the deadlock two minutes into the restart, rising to nod home Folarin Temitope’s free-kick. Substitute Alade Balogun doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 54th minute, before Wisdom Ndon reduced the deficit late on for Plateau United.
The Lagos side’s rise has been fuelled by an impressive run of four wins in five matches, aided by a slip from previous leaders Nasarawa United, who were forced to a 1–1 draw away to NPFL newcomers Kun Khalifat FC in Owerri. Abia Warriors also dropped points, falling 2–1 to Bayelsa United in Yenagoa.
Rivers United took full advantage of those stumbles, jumping into second place after a 2–1 comeback victory over Warri Wolves in Port Harcourt. Adebambo Ademola put Wolves ahead in the 25th minute, but Finidi George’s team levelled through Emmanuel Nnaji five minutes later. Samson Obi then struck in the 58th minute to hand Rivers United their second straight win and condemn Wolves to a second successive defeat.
Elsewhere, pressure is mounting on Enyimba coach Stanley Eguma after the People’s Elephant suffered their fourth league defeat of the campaign, and their second at home, against Wikki Tourists. Eguma, who was handed a two-match ultimatum earlier in the month, had previously earned a victory over Kano Pillars and a goalless draw with Abia Warriors.
At the opposite end of the table, the bottom four remained unchanged: Bendel Insurance and Kun Khalifat are level on 12 points, followed by Barau FC on 10, while former champions Kano Pillars sit rooted to the bottom with six points.
