UCL: Chelsea slip to 11th as Atalanta come from behind in Bergamo
Chelsea’s bid for automatic qualification to the Champions League knockout stage suffered a setback on Tuesday night as Atalanta came from behind to claim a 2–1 victory in Bergamo, Sport360NG reports.
Both teams entered the fixture level on 10 points after identical records in the league phase, and the balance between them was evident for much of the contest. Chelsea struck first, however, when Joao Pedro met Reece James’ delivery to give the visitors a deserved lead midway through the first half.
Atalanta remained dangerous throughout, with former Charlton and Everton forward Ademola Lookman posing constant problems for the Chelsea defence. James went close to extending the advantage after the break, but the momentum soon shifted.
The hosts found their equaliser when former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca rose to head home from a well-crafted cross. Chelsea attempted to respond, with Alejandro Garnacho testing the goalkeeper, but Atalanta completed the turnaround late on. Charles De Ketelaere was afforded too much space on the edge of the box, and he punished the visitors with a powerful low finish.
Chelsea pushed for a late equaliser, only to be denied by an outstanding save from Marco Carnesecchi to keep out Pedro’s effort.
The defeat sees Chelsea slip to 11th in the league-phase standings, outside the top eight positions that secure automatic passage to the knockout stage, with two matches still to play. Atalanta climb to third, opening a three-point cushion over the Premier League side.
Analysis: Chelsea’s Slide Raises Alarm
A draw would have kept Chelsea in a strong position to secure a top-eight finish, but lapses in concentration proved costly against an in-form Atalanta side.
Despite taking the lead, the Blues failed to maintain control and were ultimately punished for defensive slackness in the closing stages. The result extends Chelsea’s winless run to four matches in all competitions, a concerning dip in form since their 3–0 victory over Barcelona at the end of November.
With qualification now under pressure, Chelsea face a crucial final stretch if they are to avoid a difficult play-off route into the knockout rounds.
