Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri undergoes minor heart surgery
Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri has successfully undergone a minor heart operation, the club confirmed on Friday, Sport360NG reports.
The 66-year-old, who was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a condition that affects the heart’s rhythm, underwent what Italian media described as a routine procedure. Lazio expect Sarri to return to his coaching duties in the coming days.
Sarri, who was reappointed as Lazio manager in June 2025, currently leads the side in eighth place in Serie A, with six wins from 17 matches. Lazio are set to host Napoli on Sunday (11:30 GMT).
The former Chelsea and Juventus coach began his managerial career while working as a banker, eventually dedicating himself full-time to football in the early 2000s. He guided Empoli to promotion in 2013-14 before taking hometown club Napoli to two second-place finishes in three seasons.
Sarri moved to Chelsea for the 2018-19 campaign, winning the Europa League and reaching the Carabao Cup final. He returned to Italy after a single season to claim the Serie A title with Juventus in 2019-20.
He first managed Lazio from June 2021, leading them to second place in 2022-23 before resigning in March 2024.
