Nwaneri seeks game time as Arsenal teenager joins Marseille on loan
Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has completed a loan move to French side Marseille for the remainder of the season as he looks to gain regular first-team football, Sport360NG reports.
The 18-year-old featured 12 times for the Gunners across all competitions this campaign, starting four matches and scoring once in the Carabao Cup, but did not make a Premier League start. Despite signing a new contract in the summer that runs until 2030, his opportunities became increasingly limited following Arsenal’s major recruitment drive.
The arrivals of Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze for significant fees have strengthened Arsenal’s attacking options, making it harder for Nwaneri to force his way into Mikel Arteta’s preferred line-up. Although the initial view from both club and player was that remaining at the Emirates would best support his development, the chance to play regularly in a new league ultimately proved decisive.
An England Under-21 international, Nwaneri will now test himself in Ligue 1 with Marseille, who sit third in the table, eight points adrift of leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
Last season, the teenager impressed primarily on the right wing, scoring nine goals in 37 appearances across all competitions and underlining his reputation as one of England’s most exciting young prospects. This term, however, his pathway narrowed, with Madueke established as cover for Bukayo Saka and Eze operating ahead of captain Martin Odegaard in the number 10 role.
Arsenal’s strong push for silverware has also shaped selection decisions. The north London side are enjoying an outstanding campaign, holding a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, boasting a perfect record in the Champions League league phase, and carrying a narrow advantage into their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea.
Arteta’s preference for experienced, “win-now” signings has further limited opportunities for academy graduates. Midfield pairings have regularly featured Odegaard alongside summer arrival Martin Zubimendi, while defensive options have leaned towards seasoned campaigners such as Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori.
The situation has similarly affected fellow academy product Myles Lewis-Skelly. The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season last year during an injury crisis, making 42 appearances and featuring prominently in Arsenal’s Champions League quarter-final success over Real Madrid. His form earned him a senior England debut, but his involvement has reduced significantly this season.
With Arsenal competing on multiple fronts, breaking into — and staying in — the first team has become an increasingly difficult task for young players. For Nwaneri, the move to Marseille represents a chance to continue his development through regular football, even if it comes away from north London.
