Cunha’s late strike sinks Arsenal as Manchester United claim Emirates win
Matheus Cunha scored a stunning late winner to seal a dramatic 3–2 victory for Manchester United over Premier League leaders Arsenal, inflicting the Gunners’ first home defeat of the season at Emirates Stadium, Sport360NG reports.
The result, which followed victories for title rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa earlier in the round, cuts Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to four points, while lifting United into fourth place.
Arsenal had looked in control for much of the first half and were rewarded in the 29th minute when Lisandro Martínez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure.
However, the hosts handed United a route back into the contest shortly afterwards. A loose pass from Martin Zubimendi released Bryan Mbeumo clean through on goal, and the forward showed composure to round David Raya and slot into an empty net.
United emerged from the interval with renewed intent and took the lead five minutes into the second half. Patrick Dorgu produced a moment of quality, driving a fierce effort that struck the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line.
Mikel Arteta responded by making four changes in quick succession, introducing Viktor Gyökeres, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino and Ben White in an effort to wrest back control. The move appeared to pay dividends when Merino bundled home from a corner in the 84th minute to level the score.
But United had the final say. Three minutes later, substitute Cunha collected a pass from Kobbie Mainoo and curled an exquisite strike from around 25 yards into the bottom corner to silence the home crowd.
Arsenal analysis: Home setback raises fresh questions
The defeat represents a significant blow for Arsenal, who will view the match as a missed opportunity to establish a commanding lead in the title race.
Having drawn their previous two league games goalless, Arteta’s side were unable to capitalise on recent chances to pull clear of their rivals, leaving their advantage trimmed to four points.
While Arsenal remain in a strong position, the performance will concern Arteta. Despite bold substitutions at 2–1 down, the changes failed to restore control, and a tense atmosphere developed in the stands during the second half as frustration grew.
Arteta has previously dismissed crowd groans as a reflection of ambition, but this result serves as a timely warning as Arsenal seek to sustain their push to bring the Premier League title back to north London.
