Bowen leads West Ham rout as Hammers close on relegation safety
West Ham United delivered a blistering first-half display to overwhelm Sunderland and edge to within two points of Premier League safety, easing relegation fears at the London Stadium, Sport360NG reports.
The Hammers struck early and decisively, taking the lead in the 14th minute when Jarrod Bowen’s teasing cross was powerfully headed home by Crysencio Summerville. Bowen then added his name to the scoresheet from the penalty spot just before the half-hour mark after Ollie Scarles was fouled in the area by Trai Hume, calmly sending the ball into the bottom corner.
West Ham capped a dominant opening 45 minutes in emphatic style as Mateus Fernandes unleashed a stunning long-range effort into the top corner on the stroke of half-time, giving the hosts a 3–0 cushion at the break. It was the club’s first three-goal first-half haul in a home league game since July 2020.
Sunderland showed more intent after the interval and pulled one back in the 66th minute when Brian Brobbey nodded in Nordi Mukiele’s cross. The visitors threatened a late revival when Luke O’Nien’s miscued delivery was tipped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
West Ham also came close to adding a fourth in stoppage time, Fernandes again rattling the woodwork with another fierce strike from distance. The closing moments were briefly interrupted following a review of an incident involving injured Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka and a home supporter, but VAR ruled no further action was required.
The victory extends West Ham’s winning run to three matches in all competitions, their best sequence since November 2023, and follows last weekend’s success at Tottenham. The result also increases the pressure on relegation rivals Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, who face away trips to Brentford and Everton respectively.
West Ham analysis: Captain Bowen sets the tone
Just weeks ago, West Ham were seven points adrift of safety after a home defeat by Nottingham Forest and mired in a 10-match winless streak. Consecutive league victories have since revived belief under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Bowen once again proved pivotal, registering a goal and an assist inside the opening 30 minutes. In the process, the 29-year-old moved clear as West Ham’s leading Premier League contributor, reaching 102 goal involvements to surpass Michail Antonio’s previous mark.
January transfer speculation surrounded several players, but striker Callum Wilson received a warm welcome on his second-half introduction. Lucas Paqueta was absent from the squad, while James Ward-Prowse was named on the bench for the first time under Nuno but remained unused.
Sunderland analysis: Road woes deepen
Sunderland’s early-season momentum continues to fade, with Regis Le Bris’ side now managing just one win in seven league outings and none in their last seven away matches.
Despite Noah Sadiki forcing an early save from Areola, the Black Cats struggled to test the West Ham defence and did not record another effort on target until Brobbey’s goal midway through the second half.
Sunderland return home to face 19th-placed Burnley on 2 February, before a challenging run that includes fixtures against title contenders Arsenal and Liverpool.
