Marmoush strike ends City slump as Guardiola’s side see off Wolves

Omar Marmoush opened his Premier League account for the season as Manchester City returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory over bottom-placed Wolves at the Etihad Stadium, Sport360NG reports.

City had endured a difficult start to 2026, failing to record a win in four league outings, prompting Pep Guardiola to leave key figures Erling Haaland and Phil Foden on the bench. Their absence proved no hindrance, however, as the champions established control early and effectively decided the contest before the break.

Wolves set up with a deep five-man defence, but City quickly found ways through. New signing Marc Guéhi came close to marking his debut with a goal inside five minutes, only to head straight at goalkeeper José Sá. The breakthrough arrived moments later when Marmoush reacted quickest to turn in a dangerous cross from Matheus Nunes.

The visitors briefly threatened when Antoine Semenyo raced onto a ball over the top, but Sá was again alert to deny him. City’s dominance was rewarded again on the stroke of half-time as Bernardo Silva threaded a precise pass into Semenyo, who finished calmly from the edge of the area to double the lead. The forward later struck the crossbar after the interval as City continued to dictate proceedings.

Wolves’ frustrations were summed up late on when Yerson Mosquera’s flicked header clipped the bar, one of few moments of danger for the hosts. Rob Edwards’ side have now managed just one league win all season and remain cut adrift at the foot of the table, 14 points from safety.

The result briefly moves City to within four points of leaders Arsenal and ends a run of three draws and a defeat in the league. Marmoush justified Guardiola’s decision to hand him a rare start, while Guéhi impressed at centre-back, providing composure as City kept a clean sheet.

For Wolves, an unbeaten run of four matches came to an abrupt end. They offered little going forward and again struggled to convert possession into clear chances, underlining the scale of the task ahead as they stare down the prospect of relegation with 15 games remaining.
