Osimhen, Lookman lead Nigerian contingent in fight for champions league survival
Victor Osimhen will be at the centre of attention on Wednesday night as several Nigerian players enter decisive fixtures that will determine their clubs’ UEFA Champions League fate at the conclusion of the group phase, Sport360NG reports.
The Galatasaray striker faces a stern test as the Turkish champions travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City, knowing that their hopes of reaching the play-offs hang by a thread. Galatasaray must avoid a heavy defeat to remain in contention, while City also require victory to secure a top-eight finish.
Currently 17th in the standings with 10 points from seven matches, Galatasaray’s campaign has fallen short of the lofty ambitions expressed earlier in the season by Osimhen, who had urged his side to “make a statement in the most prestigious games.”
Despite the daunting task ahead, the 27-year-old remains confident his team can rise to the occasion.
“Manchester City is one of the best teams in the world. We’re going to play the game. We’ll focus on the league first, then we’ll focus on that match,” Osimhen said. “It won’t be easy, but I trust my team. I’m looking at it positively, and we can get something out of there.”
Osimhen has been one of the standout performers in the competition, scoring six goals in five appearances, but Galatasaray’s European destiny is still uncertain.
Lookman targets top-eight finish
Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman will also be in action as the Italian side chase a place in the top eight. With a goal difference of +1, Atalanta sit on 13 points but saw their position weakened by last week’s 3–2 home defeat to Athletic Bilbao.
They now have little margin for error and must secure an away victory against Union Saint-Gilloise, who are themselves battling to stay alive in the competition. Lookman, back in club colours after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, has made six Champions League appearances this season, contributing one goal and two assists.
Tella, Onyedika and Onyemaechi in play-off race
Nathan Tella and Bayer Leverkusen remain in the hunt for a play-off spot, sitting 20th with nine points. However, their inferior goal difference means they may need more than a draw against Villarreal to progress.
In Belgium, Raphael Onyedika and Club Brugge face an uphill task. Placed 27th with seven points, Brugge must defeat Marseille and rely on favourable results elsewhere to sneak into the top 24. Onyedika has been a regular contributor, registering one goal and one assist in the competition.
Bruno Onyemaechi, who has featured twice in the tournament, will be hoping for involvement as Olympiacos chase qualification. The Greek side occupy the final play-off position with eight points and need at least a draw away at Ajax, while also keeping an eye on goal difference and other results.
Ilenikhena eyes qualification with Monaco
Monaco teenager George Ilenikhena faces a defining night as the Ligue 1 side host Juventus. The French club are 21st with nine points and, like Leverkusen, may need victory rather than a draw due to their goal difference.
Ilenikhena recently made history by surpassing Nwankwo Kanu’s long-standing record to become the youngest African player to reach 15 Champions League appearances. The 19-year-old reached the milestone at 19 years and 157 days during Monaco’s heavy defeat to Real Madrid last week.
With qualification places still up for grabs, Wednesday’s fixtures promise a tense night for Nigerian stars across Europe as they battle to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
