Rayan nets first English goal as Bournemouth hold Aston Villa

Teenage forward Rayan scored his maiden goal in English football to earn AFC Bournemouth a 1-1 Premier League draw against Aston Villa, denying the visitors the chance to move up to second in the table, Sport360NG reports.

Villa took the lead in the 22nd minute with their first attempt on target, as Morgan Rogers combined with Jadon Sancho before firing a powerful finish past the Bournemouth goalkeeper.

Rayan, who had already struck the crossbar with a first-half header, drew the hosts level 10 minutes after the restart with an impressive solo effort. The 19-year-old Brazilian, making his first start since completing a £24.7m move from Vasco da Gama, collected possession near the right touchline, surged away from Lucas Digne and slotted a low shot beyond Emiliano Martínez.

Bournemouth pressed for a winner late on and came closest when substitute Ryan Christie forced a fine save from Martínez, who tipped the effort over the bar.

The draw proved costly for Villa, who would have climbed above Manchester City with victory. Instead, Unai Emery’s side remain third, level on points with City but having played a game more, and now sit nine points adrift of leaders Arsenal following the Gunners’ win over Sunderland.

Villa title hopes fade again

Villa are seven-time English champions, but their last league title came in the 1980–81 season. A run of eight straight wins across November and December briefly raised expectations, leaving the club just three points off the summit after Christmas.

However, Emery has consistently downplayed any title ambitions, and this latest failure to secure maximum points underlined the challenge facing his side. Villa have now taken just eight points from their last seven league matches, winning two, drawing two and losing three.

The visitors were boosted by the return of Ollie Watkins, who missed the previous defeat by Brentford, and briefly thought they had doubled their advantage before Watkins was ruled offside. Although Villa did go ahead moments later, they struggled to assert control, managing only four shots on target compared with Bournemouth’s nine.

Bournemouth dominated much of the second half and were worthy of a point, with Martínez required to make seven saves to preserve the draw.

With 13 matches remaining, Champions League qualification now appears Villa’s most realistic objective. They hold an eight-point cushion over sixth-placed Liverpool, albeit having played one game more than the Merseyside side.
