Arsenal moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League after a composed 3–0 home victory over Sunderland, with substitute Viktor Gyokeres scoring twice to seal the win, Sport360NG reports.

The Gunners were initially held at bay by a disciplined Sunderland back line, but patience paid off when Martin Zubimendi broke the deadlock with a fine strike that came off the post before beating Robin Roefs.

Sunderland posed intermittent threats, particularly through Brian Brobbey, whose physical presence unsettled Arsenal’s defence. The visitors went close when Kai Havertz was forced to clear off the line after David Raya spilled a long ball into the area. Declan Rice and Havertz later tested the goalkeeper with curling efforts as Arsenal increased the pressure.

The breakthrough opened the floodgates. Introduced from the bench, Gyokeres doubled the lead in the 66th minute, firing home after being set up by Havertz. The Swedish forward then completed his brace in stoppage time, tapping into an empty net following Gabriel Martinelli’s unselfish square pass.

With Aston Villa held to a draw by Bournemouth and Manchester City not in league action until Sunday, the result further tightened Arsenal’s grip on the title race.

Arsenal analysis

Arsenal’s dominance at home continues to underpin their title charge. No side in the Premier League has collected more points on home soil this season, while their defensive record remains the league’s best.

Despite being without Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Ødegaard through injury, Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a controlled, disciplined display to claim a ninth home win from 12 matches. Zubimendi, one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers this campaign, marked his influence with his fifth league goal.

Encouragingly for the Gunners, Gyokeres appears to be finding form after a slow start. Six of his eight league goals have come against newly promoted sides, and his recent scoring run suggests he could provide a crucial cutting edge during the run-in.

Sunderland analysis

The defeat does little to diminish what has been an impressive season for Sunderland. The Black Cats have exceeded expectations and again showed their organisation and resilience, particularly in the first half.

They limited Arsenal’s chances for long periods and carried a threat before conceding, but the hosts’ depth and quality from the bench ultimately proved decisive. While Sunderland created opportunities, the difference in class told as the game wore on.
