Refereeing controversy sparks Ismaily walk-off in clash with Wadi Degla
Players of Ismaily SC temporarily left the pitch in protest during their encounter with Wadi Degla SC after a contentious refereeing decision sparked outrage among the visiting side, Sport360NG reports.
Tensions flared when Wadi Degla were awarded their second goal of the match, a call that Ismaily players strongly disputed. Believing the decision to be unjust, the players staged a dramatic walk-off in a show of frustration, bringing the game to a halt.
The incident has drawn comparisons with a similar protest by the Senegal national football team, popularly known as the Teranga Lions, during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against the Morocco national football team, when they briefly left the field over disputed officiating decisions.
Some observers have since referred to the growing pattern of in-game demonstrations as the “Senegal Effect,” suggesting that teams across the continent are becoming more inclined to visibly challenge controversial calls.
In the Ismaily fixture, however, tensions eventually eased, and the players returned to the field to resume and complete the contest. As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation regarding possible disciplinary measures arising from the incident.
