UCL: Real Madrid eliminate Man City as Champions League hopes fade for Guardiola’s side

Real Madrid continued their dominance over Manchester City in Europe, knocking Pep Guardiola’s side out of the Champions League once again, Sport360NG reports.

The La Liga giants prevailed with a heavy defeat in Spain, ending City’s ambitions of a quadruple this season.

This was the 11th meeting between the clubs in five seasons, with Real emerging victorious yet again. The tie was effectively decided when Real captain Valverde scored a treble in the first half of the opening leg, while Vinicius added goals in both halves of the second leg. City’s Erling Haaland managed only a consolation strike.

City suffered a major blow when Sergio Silva was sent off following a VAR-checked handball, reducing them to ten men for nearly 70 minutes. Despite 21 shots and two disallowed goals, the English champions could not overturn the deficit.

With this exit, Manchester City face a difficult challenge to reclaim the Premier League, trailing Arsenal by nine points with just eight games left, and must also prepare for the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup quarter-finals. Guardiola has now missed the Champions League quarter-finals for the second consecutive season, a rare low in his managerial career.

Real Madrid, unbeaten in all 36 ties where they led by three or more goals from the first leg, now set their sights on a quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich, who currently hold a 6-1 advantage over Atalanta.

Alvaro Arbeloa has made a flawless start as head coach, winning his first four knockout matches in the competition.
