Sarri Backs Dele-Bashiru to Shine at Lazio Despite Challenging First Season
Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri has expressed confidence in Nigerian midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, tipping him to play a key role in the club’s plans for the 2025/26 Serie A season.
Dele-Bashiru’s future in Rome had come under scrutiny after a mixed first year at the Stadio Olimpico, where he found opportunities limited under former head coach Marco Baroni. Despite the struggles, the 25-year-old still managed to make 29 appearances, contributing five goals and three assists across all competitions.
Signed last summer from Turkish outfit Hatayspor, where he had impressed over two seasons, Dele-Bashiru has now been handed a fresh opportunity under Sarri’s leadership. The former Chelsea and Napoli boss spoke positively about the midfielder’s potential.
“Dele-Bashiru is a very strong player. If he can grasp a few tactical details, he’ll be a great asset to us,” Sarri told Pazzidifanta.
Sarri’s endorsement suggests the Super Eagles star is likely to remain at Lazio this summer, easing earlier speculation that a managerial shake-up could prompt his departure.
The midfielder has been involved in pre-season training with the rest of the squad as Sarri begins implementing his tactical vision. Lazio’s preparations include a series of friendlies against Avellino, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, Burnley, and Atromitos.
The Biancocelesti will kick off their new Serie A campaign on August 24 with a tricky away fixture at Como, one day after reigning champions Napoli open the season against newly promoted Sassuolo.
