Chelsea Confirm £37m Signing of Ajax Defender Jorrel Hato

Chelsea have bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of Dutch international Jorrel Hato from Ajax in a deal worth £37 million, Sport360NG reports.

The 19-year-old completed a medical in London over the weekend and has agreed a seven-year contract with the Stamford Bridge club. Hato becomes the eighth new arrival of the summer as Chelsea continue an aggressive recruitment drive ahead of the 2024–25 season.

“I’m really excited and happy to be here,” Hato said following the announcement. “I’ve thought carefully about my next step, and I believe Chelsea is the right place for me to grow and develop.”

A product of Ajax’s renowned youth academy, Hato broke into the first team at just 16 and was named club captain a year later. Over the course of his young career, he made 111 appearances for the Amsterdam side, showcasing his versatility by playing both at centre-back and left-back.

The Dutchman made his senior international debut in 2023 and has since earned six caps for the Netherlands.

Tactical Fit in a Competitive Squad

Despite already having seven centre-backs on their books, Chelsea appear to be targeting more balance in their defensive options. Only Levi Colwill and Benoît Badiashile are naturally left-footed, and with Badiashile’s previous season disrupted by injury, the club moved to add further cover.

New head coach Enzo Maresca is believed to see Hato as a valuable addition capable of providing both depth and tactical flexibility. With Ben Chilwell falling down the pecking order, Hato may also compete with Marc Cucurella for the left-back slot, especially with the Champions League back on the calendar.

Last season under Ajax manager Francesco Farioli, Hato operated predominantly as a left-back in a 4-3-3 system, though he spent most of the 2023–24 campaign at centre-back in a 4-2-3-1 setup. According to stats across Europe’s top six leagues, he has played more minutes in all competitions than any other player born after January 1, 2003, surpassing even Jude Bellingham and Lamine Yamal.

Chelsea’s Busy Summer Window

Hato’s arrival brings Chelsea’s summer spending past the £250 million mark. Other notable signings include:

Jamie Gittens (£48m from Borussia Dortmund): A promising English winger known for his pace and direct play.

João Pedro (£55m from Brighton): The Brazilian forward impressed last season with his creativity and finishing.

Liam Delap (£30m from Ipswich Town): A physical striker who offers a different dimension in attack.

Mamadou Sarr (£12m from Lyon): Another young central defender seen as one for the future.

Dário Essugo (£18m from Sporting CP): A combative midfielder who made his senior debut in Portugal aged just 16.

Estevão Willian (£29m from Palmeiras): The Brazilian winger’s move was finalised this summer after being agreed in May.

Kendry Páez (£17m from Independiente del Valle): The Ecuadorian teenager has officially joined after turning 18.

Chelsea’s focus on youth recruitment continues under their current project, with Hato’s signing underlining a long-term vision for squad development.
