Amorim Left Hojlund Out of Arsenal Clash
Rasmus Hojlund has been omitted from Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League opener against Arsenal at Old Trafford, as uncertainty over his future continues to grow, Sport360NG reports.
Manager Ruben Amorim is understood to have made the call on the 22-year-old striker, despite the Dane previously insisting he wanted to remain at the club. The summer arrival of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a £73.7m deal has cast doubt over Hojlund’s playing time this season.
United will also be without goalkeeper Andre Onana, who has recovered from a hamstring problem but was overlooked following strong pre-season performances from other options. “He’s fit again, but others impressed over the summer, so it’s about finding the right balance,” Amorim told Sky Sports.
Hojlund’s reduced role has been evident in recent weeks. He was left on the bench for the friendly against Fiorentina on 9 August, while Mason Mount was deployed as a false nine. Mount retains that position against Arsenal, with Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee among the substitutes.
The former Atalanta forward, who joined United for £72m two years ago, has been linked with a move to AC Milan, although no deal has been agreed. Hojlund was United’s leading striker last season, netting 10 times in 52 appearances, having scored 16 goals in his debut campaign.
United’s hierarchy is said to support Amorim’s decision, with the Portuguese coach reshaping his attack following a £200m overhaul. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha are expected to feature in the dual number 10 roles Amorim favours, while Mount, Kobbie Mainoo and captain Bruno Fernandes all provide further options in the false nine role.
Seventeen-year-old Chido Obi, who broke into the first team late last season, is also expected to gain more opportunities this term, though largely from the bench.
