Carrick’s return sparks united revival as city’s title push falters at old trafford
Michael Carrick marked a flawless return to the Old Trafford dugout as caretaker manager, guiding Manchester United to a stirring derby victory that dealt a heavy blow to Manchester City’s Premier League title ambitions, Sport360NG reports.
Second-half strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu sealed a 2-0 success on a rare afternoon of unbridled optimism for the home side, as Old Trafford rediscovered its voice after weeks of unrest.
United’s display was watched with evident delight by Sir Alex Ferguson, while the crowd revelled in City striker Erling Haaland’s muted afternoon, greeting his late substitution with pointed irony.
City remained in contention for long spells only thanks to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who produced a succession of outstanding saves to deny Dorgu, Amad Diallo, Casemiro and Mbeumo.
The resistance was finally broken when United captain Bruno Fernandes launched a rapid counter-attack, releasing Mbeumo on the left. Fresh from Africa Cup of Nations duty, the forward kept his composure to finish clinically.
Eleven minutes later, United doubled their advantage. City defender Rico Lewis was caught wrong-footed, allowing Dorgu to dart ahead of him and convert Matheus Cunha’s low cut-back.
United could have added further gloss, with three goals ruled out for offside and Diallo striking the post late on. City, meanwhile, offered little response as Haaland’s lean run stretched to one goal in seven matches.
The result extended City manager Pep Guardiola’s side’s winless Premier League run to four games, loosening their grip on the title race and presenting an opening for Arsenal at the summit.
For United, the victory briefly lifted them into fourth place, a position they struggled to reach under former boss Ruben Amorim, and ensured Carrick a warm reception as he applauded supporters alongside his new coaching staff.
Analysis: Carrick Delivers the Response United Craved
There was an early moment of controversy when Diogo Dalot escaped severe punishment for a high challenge on Jeremy Doku, a decision upheld by referee Anthony Taylor and fourth official Craig Pawson.
Once past that scare, United produced the kind of cohesive, front-foot performance their supporters have long demanded. Defensively, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez were instrumental in neutralising Haaland, with Martinez making a crucial sliding block when danger loomed.
Goalkeeper Senne Lammens atoned for an earlier lapse by saving a goal-bound header from Max Alleyne, while Kobbie Mainoo impressed in midfield alongside Casemiro, dictating tempo and control.
By the final whistle, the Stretford End was serenading Carrick. Having now added another standout victory to his interim spell in 2021, the former midfielder lingered on the pitch to acknowledge the acclaim, a reminder, however brief, of how quickly belief can return at Old Trafford.
