Jota’s Younger Brother, André Silva, Also Killed in Tragic Car Crash
The devastating accident that claimed the life of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has also taken the life of his younger brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, a fellow professional footballer who played for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.
According to reports from AFP, the fatal crash occurred in northwestern Spain on Thursday, just weeks after Jota celebrated his wedding. Spanish authorities confirmed that the vehicle the brothers were travelling in veered off the motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, located in the province of Zamora.
André Silva, 25, was born on April 28, 2000, in Gondomar, Portugal. He died alongside his elder brother in the early hours of July 3, leaving the football world reeling from the loss of two brothers united by both family and football.
A versatile attacking player, Silva stood at 1.68 metres and was known for his technical ability and attacking flair. Naturally right-footed, he could operate across the forward line — as an attacking midfielder, on the left wing, or in a more central attacking role. At the time of his death, his market value was estimated at €450,000, the highest in his career as of June 2025.
Silva’s football journey began in 2008 at Gondomar SC before joining the youth ranks of FC Porto. His development saw him feature for various Portuguese sides, including Famalicão U23, Boavista U23, Gondomar, and most recently Penafiel, where he had been playing since 2023.
Though he never commanded a transfer fee, Silva’s career was defined by steady progression and dedication. His path through the domestic system reflected a deep passion for the game — one he shared with his brother Diogo, who rose to global prominence with Liverpool and Portugal.
Their deaths have cast a profound pall over the football community, uniting fans and clubs in mourning the loss of two young lives intertwined by blood and a shared dream.
