Manchester City beat Everton to go top of WSL table

Manchester City climbed to the top of the Women’s Super League after a gritty 2–1 win over Everton at Goodison Park, Sport360NG reports.

Chelsea’s draw with Arsenal on Saturday opened the door for City, and Andrée Jeglertz’s side seized their chance with a determined display that extended their winning run to seven matches.

Vivianne Miedema put the visitors in front after 21 minutes, calmly slotting home following an incisive pass from Iman Beney. Everton hit back before half-time through Kelly Gago, who produced a deft flick from Toni Payne’s cross to beat Ayaka Yamashita.

City restored their lead ten minutes into the second half when Khadija Shaw climbed above Rion Ishikawa to power in Leila Ouahabi’s cross.

Everton came close to equalising again as Ornella Vignola’s long-range effort rattled the woodwork, while Yamashita was called upon to deny Hikaru Kitagawa late on.

The result lifted City one point clear of Chelsea at the summit, while Everton slipped to 10th, only four points above the relegation play-off place.

City show resilience in title push

Jeglertz’s team were fully aware that Chelsea’s slip-up gave them a chance to take control of the title race, and they delivered under pressure.

City started brightly with slick attacking play that led to Miedema’s opener. Although Gago’s equaliser unsettled them briefly, Shaw’s persistence eventually paid off with a decisive header.

Despite moments of defensive vulnerability, City’s resolve saw them through as they continued their pursuit of a first league title since 2016. Jeglertz will, however, be mindful that maintaining consistency remains key in the weeks ahead.

Encouraging signs for Everton despite defeat

Everton’s winless run in the WSL has now stretched to seven games, but there were encouraging signs for Brian Sørensen’s side against the league leaders.

Gago was a standout performer, building on her goal against Aston Villa last weekend with another well-taken finish. The French forward, who joined from Nantes last season, has struggled for minutes this term but is beginning to rediscover her sharpness in front of goal.

Her instinctive equaliser and lively display offered positives for Sørensen as Everton look to turn competitiveness into results and climb away from the lower end of the table.
