Bruno Guimarães sparks Newcastle to win as Burnley suffer sixth straight defeat
Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães delivered a moment of brilliance by scoring directly from a corner as 10-man Burnley’s Premier League woes deepened at St James’ Park, Sport360NG reports.
The Brazilian midfielder’s stunning opener, followed by a penalty from Anthony Gordon, condemned Burnley to a sixth consecutive league defeat. Burnley’s Lucas Pires had earlier been sent off, leaving Scott Parker’s side struggling to stay in the contest.
Burnley did find a late consolation when substitute Zian Flemming converted a stoppage-time penalty after Jacob Ramsey handled the ball, but it proved insufficient to prevent another defeat.
Guimarães’ opener caught Burnley by surprise. Rather than passing to a teammate from Newcastle’s first corner, he curled the ball over the wall and past former colleague Martin Dubravka into the far corner, becoming the first Newcastle player to score directly from a corner in a Premier League match.
The game turned further against Burnley moments later when Pires received a red card for fouling Anthony Elanga on a breakaway. Newcastle capitalized on the numerical advantage, earning a first-half penalty when Burnley midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu’s handball was confirmed by VAR. Gordon calmly converted from the spot, sending Dubravka the wrong way for his second successive penalty goal.
After the break, Newcastle continued to press. Yoane Wissa made his club debut off the bench following a knee injury, while Guimarães and defender Maxime Esteve came close to extending the lead, only for Dubravka to keep them at bay.
Burnley’s Flemming restored some late hope with his penalty, again awarded following a VAR review, but Newcastle held on to secure a 2-1 victory, climbing temporarily to 10th place. Burnley remain four points from safety.
Newcastle: Momentum Building
Head coach Eddie Howe breathed a sigh of relief at the final whistle as Newcastle survived a nervy ending, echoing their narrow escape against Tottenham earlier in the week. The Magpies have now collected 10 points from their last four league games, marking their best Premier League run since April.
With a Wear-Tyne derby against Sunderland looming, Newcastle will look to maintain their resurgence. Sitting just three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, Howe’s side have reason to believe that a sustained run could propel them into Europe.
Burnley: Defensive Woes Continue
Despite a spirited display, Parker’s side remain mired in difficulty. Burnley started brightly but collapsed after Guimarães’ goal and Pires’ dismissal, forcing tactical adjustments in the second half.
Though Dubravka’s saves and Flemming’s late penalty kept the scoreline respectable, Burnley’s defensive vulnerabilities are glaring. They have now conceded 30 goals, the most in the Premier League this season, and have scored just twice in their past four matches, highlighting the challenges that lie ahead.
