Manchester City secure Marc Guehi in £20m deal to reinforce defensive ranks

Manchester City have completed the signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace for a fee of £20m, strengthening their defensive options midway through the season, Sport360NG reports.

The England international, who had attracted interest from several leading European clubs and was close to a move to Liverpool last summer, was approaching the final months of his Palace contract. Guehi completed a medical on Sunday after agreeing personal terms and has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract at the Etihad Stadium.

A product of the Chelsea academy, the 25-year-old leaves Palace after making 188 appearances since his arrival from Swansea City in 2021. He featured 33 times this season, captaining the south London side during their maiden Europa Conference League campaign.

Guehi becomes City’s second major acquisition of the January window following the arrival of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth earlier this month.

“I’m really happy and incredibly proud to be here,” Guehi said after completing the move. “This feels like the reward for all the hard work I’ve put into my career. To join the best club in England and be part of such an outstanding squad is something special.”

Why City moved for Guehi

City’s interest intensified earlier this month amid injury problems affecting Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias. Those absences were exposed in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Manchester United, when City fielded a youthful back line containing three players aged 21 or under alongside Nathan Aké.

Defensive fragility proved costly in that match, and Guehi’s arrival is expected to add both quality and leadership. Since the start of last season, he ranks among the Premier League’s top centre-backs for clean sheets, duels won, aerial duels and progressive passing. This campaign, he has also been prominent for interceptions, recoveries and overall duel success.

His leadership credentials are well established, having captained Palace to victory over City in last season’s FA Cup final and played a key role in England’s run to the final of Euro 2024.

Tactical fit under Guardiola

Guehi’s composure in possession is seen as a key asset for a City side that regularly faces deep defensive blocks. Comfortable passing and carrying the ball with either foot, he offers an ability to progress play from the back and switch attacks when opponents overload one side of the pitch.

Versatility is another strength. He has operated on both sides of a central pairing and across a back three for club and country, aligning well with City’s frequent in-possession shifts between back-four and back-three systems under Pep Guardiola.

While not primarily known for aerial dominance, Guehi is strong in ground duels and effective when stepping into midfield areas to press, an attribute valued in City’s high defensive line.

Long-term planning

With John Stones and Aké enduring recurring injury issues and several younger defenders still developing, City view Guehi as a long-term solution rather than a short-term fix. Sources indicate the club had tracked him for some time and would have pursued a summer move, but the chance to secure his signature this month proved decisive.

At £20m, the deal represents notable value for a proven Premier League defender entering his prime, underlining City’s intention to balance immediate needs with long-term squad building as they continue to compete across all fronts this season.
