Mbappe Set for Emotional PSG Reunion as Real Madrid Clash Looms at Club World Cup
Kylian Mbappe is set to face Paris Saint-Germain for the first time since his headline-making switch to Real Madrid, as the two European giants square off in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday.
The French forward, who left PSG in 2024 after a record-breaking seven-year spell that yielded 256 goals, is expected to make his first start of the tournament following a recent illness. Mbappe made an instant impact off the bench in the quarter-finals, netting a spectacular overhead kick to help Madrid edge Borussia Dortmund 3-2.
“He’s still not quite at full fitness, but improving every day,” Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso said. The tournament is Alonso’s first major assignment since taking charge of the Spanish champions.
Wednesday’s semi-final brings with it an added layer of drama, as Mbappe’s exit from PSG came on a free transfer and was followed by legal disputes between both parties. Despite the controversy, the 25-year-old has hit the ground running in Madrid, scoring 43 goals in 56 appearances so far this season.
PSG, meanwhile, booked their place in the last four with a resilient 2-0 win over Bayern Munich, despite finishing the match with just nine men. Their manager, Luis Enrique—himself a former Real Madrid player—downplayed the significance of the opposition.
“Who we play doesn’t matter. What matters is reaching the final, and we’re determined to do that,” Enrique said.
With a spot in Sunday’s final at stake, the high-stakes encounter sets the stage for another gripping chapter in the fierce rivalry between two of Europe’s footballing heavyweights.
