Smith strike ends City run as Arsenal revive top-three push

Arsenal brought Manchester City’s 13-match winning run in the Women’s Super League to a halt with a deserved 1–0 victory that strengthened their push for a top-three finish, Sport360NG reports.

An early goal from Olivia Smith condemned City to their first league defeat since the opening weekend and denied the leaders the chance to stretch their advantage at the summit to 11 points.

Buoyed by their recent success in the inaugural FIFA Champions Cup, Arsenal returned to domestic action with renewed energy and quickly imposed themselves on the contest.

City almost stunned the hosts inside the opening minute when Vivianne Miedema went close against her former club, but Arsenal soon took control, restricting the visitors largely to counter-attacking opportunities.

The breakthrough arrived in the 17th minute when Smith showcased her pace and composure. The Canadian winger raced on to Mariona Caldentey’s incisive through ball, beat Rebecca Knaak in the footrace, rounded goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita and calmly rolled the ball into an unguarded net.

Arsenal continued to threaten in behind City’s high defensive line, with Yamashita producing a fine save to deny Alessia Russo shortly before the interval.

City improved after the break but found clear chances hard to come by. Miedema thought she had equalised midway through the second half, only for the effort to be ruled out for a foul on Katie McCabe in the build-up.

The visitors were also frustrated by a contentious moment when Caldentey, appearing to be the last defender, clipped Lauren Hemp as she surged towards the penalty area, but no foul was given.

Hemp’s sliced effort from close range later summed up City’s afternoon as Arsenal held firm. City remain eight points clear at the top with seven games left, while Arsenal sit 10 points back with a game in hand.

Tactical Edge Fuels Arsenal Resurgence

Just weeks after a League Cup semi-final exit raised questions about their direction, Arsenal looked rejuvenated and purposeful in front of a packed home crowd.

Renee Slegers’ side effectively targeted two areas of City vulnerability. Smith’s speed repeatedly exposed the lack of recovery pace in the visitors’ central defence, while an aggressive press limited the influence of midfield conductor Yui Hasegawa and disrupted City’s build-up play.

The performance underlined Smith’s growing importance following her £1m move, with the 21-year-old continuing a timely run of form that hints at an even greater impact next season.

Despite trailing in the title race, Arsenal remain firmly in contention across multiple competitions, with this result reinforcing belief that the campaign could yet end with silverware.

City Left Searching for Answers

For City, the defeat was an uncharacteristically flat display, coming just a week after a five-goal outburst against Chelsea.

Khadija Shaw, Hemp and Kerolin were largely subdued as City managed just eight attempts, only one of them on target, their lowest attacking output of the season.

Andree Jeglertz responded at half-time by introducing Sam Coffey to add physical presence in midfield, a change that helped City enjoy longer spells of possession without significantly increasing their threat.

Concerns over pace in central defence remain unresolved, and this match marked the first time City have failed to score in a league game under Jeglertz.

Even so, the setback is unlikely to derail a campaign that still points strongly towards a second Women’s Super League title, provided the leaders quickly rediscover their usual sharpness.
