Arsenal drop more points under pressure in Brentford 1-1 draw

Arsenal were unable to restore their six-point advantage at the summit of the Premier League after being held to a 1-1 draw by a spirited Brentford side in west London, Sport360NG reports.

Following Manchester City’s emphatic midweek victory over Fulham, the pressure was on the league leaders to respond. Instead, they could add only a single point to their tally on a testing evening away from home.

The visitors struggled for rhythm in the opening half and failed to register a shot on target before the interval. An early set-piece offered promise, but Gabriel’s attempt did not trouble Brentford’s defence. The clearer opportunity fell to the hosts when Igor Thiago met a delivery inside the box, only for goalkeeper David Raya to produce an excellent save from close range.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta turned to his captain at the break, introducing Martin Odegaard in place of Eberechi Eze, and the change injected urgency into the visitors’ play. Their breakthrough arrived soon after the restart and from their first effort on target. Noni Madueke rose to guide Piero Hincapie’s driven cross beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Yet Brentford refused to retreat. Keane Lewis-Potter squandered a golden opportunity to equalise, glancing a free header wide from a corner, while at the other end Michael Kayode delivered a superb last-ditch challenge to prevent Viktor Gyokeres from doubling Arsenal’s lead after hesitation from Declan Rice.

The hosts’ persistence was rewarded midway through the second half. Kayode’s long throw caused problems at the near post, and Lewis-Potter reacted quickest at the far side to turn home and bring Brentford level.

The momentum briefly swung in Brentford’s favour as they chased a winner. Gabriel survived a nervy moment following a high challenge on Dango Ouattara, while Raya was required again to tip a dangerous free-kick over the bar. Thiago then broke through on goal, but Cristhian Mosquera, deputising for the unwell William Saliba, timed his intervention perfectly to deny the forward. Rice also tracked back to make a crucial block during another Brentford counter-attack.

Neither side could find a decisive second goal, leaving Arsenal with a slimmed-down lead in the title race and Brentford with a valuable point that strengthens their push for European qualification.
