Abraham strikes late as Aston Villa rescue point against Leeds United
Substitute Tammy Abraham marked his Premier League return to Aston Villa with a crucial late equaliser as the hosts battled back to secure a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Villa Park, Sport360NG reports.
Leeds appeared set to claim only their second away league victory of the campaign after Anton Stach produced a moment of brilliance midway through the first half. In the 31st minute, Stach shaped to deliver a cross but instead unleashed a stunning 30-yard free-kick that caught Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez off guard, curling into the top corner.
Villa, who would have drawn level on points with second-placed Manchester City with a win, responded positively after the setback. They nearly restored parity before the break, but Karl Darlow produced an outstanding save to deny Amadou Onana in first-half stoppage time.
The hosts intensified the pressure in the second half, with Darlow again called into action to brilliantly tip Emiliano Buendia’s effort onto the post. Leeds’ resistance, however, was finally broken in the 88th minute.
From a corner situation, Ezri Konsa won the initial aerial duel, and Abraham reacted quickest, diverting the ball into the net with his knee to register his first league goal since rejoining Villa in an £18.2 million move from Besiktas in January.
The goal transformed the atmosphere inside Villa Park, turning earlier frustration into celebration as Unai Emery’s side salvaged a deserved point.
Villa remain third in the table, seven points adrift of leaders Arsenal, who are set to face Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s North London derby. Meanwhile, the result lifts Leeds seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Villa Analysis: Encouraging Response, Lingering Questions
Despite their strong league position, Emery’s men continue to show signs of inconsistency. The draw means Villa have collected just five points from their last four outings, a return that underlines the manager’s recent caution regarding talk of a title push.
Ahead of the fixture, Unai Emery urged supporters to recognise the progress made this season, describing the club’s current standing as enviable and a platform for achieving ambitious objectives.
Yet this encounter highlighted the fine margins between contenders and challengers. Facing a Leeds side with a modest away record, Villa were expected to take maximum points. Instead, they required a late intervention from Abraham to avoid defeat.
The introduction of Jadon Sancho and Abraham injected urgency into Villa’s attack, with the latter once again proving decisive. Having scored in the recent FA Cup defeat to Newcastle, Abraham’s latest contribution will boost both his confidence and Villa’s hopes of securing Champions League qualification.
While the boos at half-time reflected frustration, the late equaliser ensured the final whistle was greeted with relief, and renewed belief, at Villa Park.
