Chelsea revived their push for a Champions League place with a commanding comeback victory over Aston Villa, inspired by a clinical hat-trick from Joao Pedro at Villa Park, Sport360NG reports.
The Brazilian forward took his season tally to 17 goals, while Cole Palmer also found the net as the Blues overturned an early deficit to secure an important Premier League win against their top-four rivals.
Aston Villa had made a dream start when Douglas Luiz scored his first goal in over two years just two minutes into the match. Leon Bailey delivered a low cross into the area and Luiz reacted quickest, flicking the ball in from close range to give the hosts the lead.
However, Chelsea gradually seized control of the contest. Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was called into action early, denying both Joao Pedro and Palmer, while Reece James saw penalty appeals waved away after a challenge from Ian Maatsen.
Chelsea’s persistence paid off when Joao Pedro restored parity, calmly tapping in from close range after being set up by Malo Gusto.
The visitors continued to dictate the tempo but were briefly threatened when James misplaced a pass, allowing Villa to counter. Ollie Watkins beat goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen during the break, though the effort was ruled out for a marginal offside following a VAR review.
Villa suffered further frustration in first-half stoppage time as Chelsea took the lead. Enzo Fernandez threaded a precise pass into Joao Pedro’s path and the striker delicately lifted the ball over Martinez, with VAR confirming he was narrowly onside.
Chelsea extended their advantage 10 minutes into the second half when Palmer finished neatly, before Joao Pedro completed his hat-trick after being set up by Alejandro Garnacho.
The victory lifts Chelsea to fifth in the Premier League table, just one place behind Villa and only three points adrift, boosting their hopes of securing a Champions League berth. The result also came a day after head coach Liam Rosenior warned that time was running out for his side to close the gap on the top four.
For Aston Villa, the defeat represents their heaviest home loss in two years and highlights a worrying dip in form. Having previously enjoyed a 12-month unbeaten run at Villa Park in the league until August, Unai Emery’s side have now lost three of their last five home matches.
Villa’s struggles continued despite a promising start. Watkins had a chance to reignite the contest at 3–1 when he rounded Jorgensen but failed to get a shot away, reflecting both his current form and the team’s broader difficulties.
The defeat leaves Villa with just one win in their last seven matches across all competitions, a run that also included their FA Cup exit at the hands of Newcastle United.
Although Emery’s team remains inside the top four, the pressure is mounting as the race for Champions League qualification intensifies. Their next league outing, away to Manchester United on March 15, could prove pivotal in shaping the remainder of their campaign.
Villa’s once-formidable home record has also taken a hit. The Midlands side have now lost four of their last seven matches at Villa Park, with late goals required in recent games against Leeds United and Brighton merely to salvage points.
With Chelsea leading 4–1 late in the match, many home supporters had already begun leaving the stadium, and by the final whistle large sections of Villa Park stood empty as the hosts’ difficulties deepened.
