Saka strike secures hard-fought Arsenal win at Brighton to extend premier league lead to seven points
Arsenal survived a sustained Brighton onslaught to claim a narrow victory at the Amex Stadium, stretching their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points, Sport360NG reports.
Bukayo Saka’s early deflected strike proved decisive for Mikel Arteta’s side, who capitalised on Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest to strengthen their title push.
The visitors nearly endured a disastrous start within seconds when goalkeeper David Raya’s misplaced clearance fell straight to Carlos Baleba. However, the Brighton midfielder’s attempted chip lacked power, allowing Gabriel to recover and head the ball off the line.
Arsenal then rode their luck in the ninth minute when Saka’s routine effort took a deflection off Baleba and slipped through the legs of Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who appeared well positioned to deal with the shot.
Brighton dominated long spells of the contest and created several threatening moments, while tensions rose among the home supporters who accused Arsenal of time-wasting. The frustration reached boiling point just before the hour mark when Raya made a save from Georginio Rutter and remained on the turf clutching his shoulder before receiving treatment.
The Seagulls continued to press for an equaliser and came agonisingly close in the second half, but Mats Wieffer squandered a golden opportunity by heading straight at Raya from close range.
Despite Brighton’s attacking pressure, Arsenal managed to withstand the storm as the hosts gradually ran out of momentum, allowing the visitors to secure a scrappy yet hugely valuable victory on a night when their closest title rivals dropped points.
Arsenal cling on for crucial victory
Arsenal’s display was far from convincing, with Arteta’s men spending long periods on the back foot and creating few clear chances.
Saka’s fortunate early goal remained the only real moment of attacking threat from the Gunners, while Brighton dictated much of the tempo throughout the encounter.
Defender Gabriel stood out with a commanding performance at the heart of Arsenal’s defence, stepping up impressively in the absence of injured partner William Saliba to repel Brighton’s repeated attacks.
As the final whistle sounded, the travelling Arsenal supporters celebrated passionately, their joy amplified by news of Manchester City’s draw earlier in the evening.
For a team chasing the Premier League title, victories like this, earned through resilience rather than flair, could ultimately prove decisive.
Brighton left to rue missed opportunities
Brighton entered the contest buoyed by a recent run of positive results and began the match with confidence, taking the game to the league leaders from the outset.
However, their efforts were undone by a deflected goal and a costly mistake from Verbruggen, leaving them chasing the game despite controlling large spells.
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler was animated throughout on the touchline, urging his players forward while voicing frustration at the officiating.
The home side’s best opportunity to level the match arrived in the second half when Wieffer found himself unmarked in front of goal, only to direct his header straight at Raya.
Although Brighton’s performance drew applause from the home crowd at full-time, the Seagulls were left reflecting on a night of missed chances against the Premier League leaders.
