Osula’s late strike seals dramatic win for 10-man Newcastle against Manchester United

Substitute William Osula scored a stunning late goal as Newcastle United, reduced to 10 men for much of the match, defeated Manchester United and handed Michael Carrick his first loss as the club’s manager, Sport360NG reports.
Carrick, who spent part of his childhood watching Newcastle from the Gallowgate End, had warned his players about the challenge of playing at St James’ Park. His prediction proved accurate as Newcastle delivered a spirited performance in front of a raucous home crowd despite going down to 10 men in the first half.
The match appeared destined to end in a draw after Casemiro’s header cancelled out Anthony Gordon’s penalty. However, Osula produced the decisive moment in the 90th minute, cutting inside the penalty area before firing a powerful strike beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe later revealed the striker had stayed behind after training the previous day to practice finishing.
“Will asked for 10 extra balls after training yesterday,” Howe said. “He wanted to work on his finishing, and the goal he scored today was almost identical to one he practiced. He scored eight out of 10 in that session. If you put in the work, you earn the reward. I’m delighted for him.”
The game had already been filled with drama long before Osula’s late heroics.
Newcastle were incensed late in the first half when midfielder Jacob Ramsey was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Referee Peter Bankes ruled Ramsey had attempted to win a penalty by going down under minimal contact after nudging the ball past Lammens.
Despite their frustration, Newcastle quickly regrouped and were awarded a penalty when Bruno Fernandes fouled Gordon inside the box. Gordon calmly converted from the spot, placing his effort straight down the middle for his 15th goal of the season.
Manchester United responded in stoppage time before the break. Casemiro made a clever run to the near post and headed home Fernandes’ free-kick to level the score.
After the restart, Gordon came close to restoring Newcastle’s lead but fired wide at the back post. Manchester United also threatened late on, with Aaron Ramsdale producing an excellent save to deny Leny Yoro’s header, while substitute Joshua Zirkzee was also thwarted by the Newcastle goalkeeper.
Just when the contest seemed headed for a stalemate, Osula delivered the decisive blow with a brilliant strike to secure all three points for the hosts.
The victory lifts Newcastle to 12th in the Premier League standings, while Manchester United remain third.
Howe’s Decisions Prove Crucial
The atmosphere inside St James’ Park was tense at half-time, with loud boos directed at referee Bankes following Ramsey’s dismissal and the lengthy stoppage time.
However, Newcastle showed resilience after the break. Despite playing with 10 men, they matched Manchester United’s intensity and continued to push forward.
Osula, who had not scored since September and struggled during a recent start against Qarabag, proved an inspired substitution. His decisive goal justified Howe’s faith at a crucial moment.
Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale also played a key role. Making his first league start since December, he delivered several important saves to keep Manchester United’s attack at bay.
Newcastle entered the match after losing five of their previous six league games, making the victory particularly significant.
“We got the red card and it would have been easy for the players to feel sorry for themselves,” Howe said. “But they stood up in the second half and believed they could still win the game. That’s one of the best feelings I’ve experienced.”
Carrick Faces First Setback
For Manchester United, the defeat brings an end to their unbeaten start under Carrick.
While the former midfielder has enjoyed an impressive beginning in the role, this match exposed several weaknesses in United’s performance.
The visitors struggled to control the game and once again allowed their opponents to dictate the tempo. The connection between midfield and attack was often lacking, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha largely ineffective and striker Benjamin Sesko barely involved.
Captain Bruno Fernandes endured a frustrating night, while Kobbie Mainoo was unable to assert himself in midfield.
United had previously shown resilience under Carrick, including a dramatic late equaliser against West Ham that preserved their unbeaten record. This time, however, they could not find a way back.
Carrick will now look to respond when Manchester United host Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 15 March. Victory would strengthen their push for Champions League qualification, while another defeat could raise further questions about his long-term suitability for the role.
