Liverpool Agree £116m Deal for Florian Wirtz
Liverpool have finalized a major transfer agreement to sign Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal is worth a total of £116 million, including a guaranteed £100 million and £16 million in performance-based add-ons. These bonus payments would be activated only if Liverpool achieve sustained success at the highest level potentially making it the most expensive transfer in British football history.
Wirtz’s Track Record and European Interest
Wirtz, who made his debut for Leverkusen at 17, has since scored 57 goals in 197 appearances and was instrumental in their historic 2024 Bundesliga title win. Internationally, he has earned 31 caps for Germany and scored seven goals. His rising profile attracted interest from top European clubs, including Manchester City and Bayern Munich, though both opted out due to the high price tag.
What Wirtz Brings to Liverpool
Edu Rubio, a former coach with West Ham, Wolves, and Crystal Palace, praised Wirtz’s versatility and intelligence on the pitch. He noted that the midfielder can play both centrally and from wide positions, offering creativity, goal-scoring ability, and strong work ethic. However, Rubio also questioned how quickly Wirtz will adapt to the Premier League’s pace and physicality, though he remains confident in the player’s potential.
