Guardiola Applauds Man City’s Effort Despite Club World Cup Exit to Al Hilal
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has commended his team’s performance despite their dramatic 4-3 defeat to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup, calling the encounter a tough battle defined by missed chances and exceptional goalkeeping.
“It’s always difficult at this stage of the competition. We gave them opportunities on the counter, but overall we played well and created many chances,” Guardiola said. “It’s disappointing because we were in a good place. Still, I can only appreciate the commitment of the players and staff — they gave their all.”
The European champions were eliminated from the tournament on Monday night in what will go down as one of the most surprising results in recent Club World Cup history. After a 2-2 draw in regular time, Marcos Leonardo’s extra-time goal sealed a memorable victory for Al Hilal.
Reflecting on the game, Guardiola highlighted the impact of Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who was instrumental in keeping City at bay. “We had a lot of attacking moments, but Bounou made some unbelievable saves. The team showed good spirit. Now, it’s time to regroup and come back stronger next season,” he added.
City had taken an early lead through Bernardo Silva, who converted a Rayan Ait-Nouri cross in the ninth minute. Al Hilal players appealed for handball in the build-up, but the goal stood after a brief review.
Despite dominating large stretches of the match and crafting multiple scoring opportunities, City were repeatedly thwarted by Bounou, who denied clear-cut chances from Silva and Jeremy Doku.
Al Hilal took advantage of City’s wastefulness and gradually fought back before delivering the final blow in extra time. The Saudi side’s win secured a quarter-final clash with Brazilian outfit Fluminense.
In a post-match message, Manchester City thanked their supporters, writing: “Thank you all for your amazing support in the US and at home during the #FIFACWC. We’ll see you in August for the @premierleague.”
