Alexander-Arnold Claims First Madrid Assist as Alonso’s Men Reach Club World Cup Quarter-Finals
Trent Alexander-Arnold provided his first assist in Real Madrid colours as Xabi Alonso’s side edged past Juventus to book a place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
The former Liverpool defender, making his fourth consecutive start for Madrid, had a quiet opening 45 minutes at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. But early in the second half, he produced a pinpoint cross that Gonzalo Garcia powered into the net to give Los Blancos the lead.
Despite the narrow victory, Alonso’s men were far from comfortable in the opening stages. Their backline looked shaky against a confident Juventus attack, with Randal Kolo Muani missing a golden chance to put the Italians ahead after a slick through ball from Kenan Yildiz. The Turkish teenager later forced a deflection from a thunderous effort that nearly found the target.
Madrid’s clearest opportunity before the break came via Jude Bellingham, who was denied by an alert Michele Di Gregorio. The Juventus goalkeeper also produced a stunning one-handed save to thwart Federico Valverde and continued his heroics into the second half, frustrating both Bellingham and Dean Huijsen.
However, there was little he could do about Garcia’s bullet header—his third of the tournament—which proved to be the decisive moment. The cross from Alexander-Arnold was delivered with trademark whip and precision, needing only a solid connection to beat Di Gregorio.
Madrid will now await the winner of the final last-16 clash between Borussia Dortmund and Monterrey, with their quarter-final set for Saturday.
Alexander-Arnold’s Arrival Begins with a Spark
Supporters of the Spanish giants will be encouraged by Alexander-Arnold’s early impact. The England full-back was renowned for his creativity at Liverpool, where he racked up 92 assists across all competitions—more than any other Premier League defender during his time there.
His delivery for Garcia’s match-winner highlighted exactly what he brings to Alonso’s evolving squad, and fans will hope it’s just the beginning of a productive partnership.
Garcia, 21, continues to shine alongside Arda Guler in Madrid’s youthful setup, and his consistent form has drawn comparisons with legendary striker Raul Gonzalez.
Standout Performers and Missed Opportunities
Garcia’s goal capped off another polished display from the young forward, who has contributed a goal or assist in every Club World Cup outing so far. Meanwhile, Juventus’ Di Gregorio was arguably the standout player for the Italians, keeping them in the game with a string of excellent stops.
On the other hand, Kolo Muani will be left rueing his missed chance early on. The Frenchman had time and space to convert Yildiz’s pass but lifted his shot over Courtois and the crossbar, missing what might have changed the tone of the game.
