Authorities Closing in on Cause of Fatal Crash Involving Liverpool Star Diogo Jota and Brother

An update into the devastating car crash that claimed the lives of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre, is expected in the coming days, according to MailOnline.

The Guardia Civil and traffic authorities in Zamora, Spain, are examining key details surrounding the incident, particularly the speed of the brothers’ £180,000 acid green Lamborghini Huracán when it veered off the A-52 motorway early Thursday morning.

Initial findings suggest the high-performance vehicle—capable of reaching 200mph—suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another car near Cernadilla, around 10 miles from the Portuguese border.

Alfonso Ibáñez, the provincial traffic chief in Zamora, is overseeing efforts to analyze crash statistics from that part of the motorway, which has already recorded six fatalities this year—an improvement from the 11 reported in 2024.

Investigators are also reviewing the road’s condition, which has been described by locals as particularly hazardous due to potholes, ongoing roadworks, wildlife crossings, and deteriorated lane markings.

Just one day prior to the fatal crash, a 60-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in a separate incident on the same section of the A-52.

The Jota brothers were reportedly on a road trip through northern Spain, heading toward Santander to board an overnight ferry bound for the UK. Portuguese media indicated that Diogo had been advised not to fly due to a recent lung procedure. He had only just returned from his June 22 wedding in Porto to longtime partner Rute.

Andre Silva, 26, also a professional footballer, died at the scene alongside his brother. The pair were buried in Porto on Saturday.

Images from the crash site show the mangled front of the Lamborghini lying off the side of the motorway. Forensic teams are now working to determine the vehicle’s exact speed, the cause of the tyre failure, and whether any other factors contributed to the crash.

The car is believed to have overtaken another vehicle before swerving violently to the left and slamming into a barrier. Authorities are now piecing together the final moments leading up to the accident.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the football community and left the Jota family in mourning, with many questions still unanswered as investigations continue.
