Mexico Beat USA to Clinch Record 10th Gold Cup Title

Mexico came from behind to defeat the United States 2-1 on Sunday, successfully defending their CONCACAF Gold Cup crown and claiming the trophy for a record 10th time.

Edson Álvarez headed home the winner in the 77th minute, sealing a well-earned victory in a typically intense showdown between the regional heavyweights and 2026 World Cup co-hosts.

Mexico controlled large stretches of the match at Houston’s NRG Stadium and capitalized on their dominance against a youthful U.S. squad missing several key players.

Álvarez’s decisive goal marked a poignant moment for the West Ham United midfielder, who had previously suffered a painful injury at the same venue during last year’s Copa América.

“This is very emotional for me,” Álvarez said. “Ever since arriving in Houston, I’ve been thinking about that tough moment. I just asked for one more joy.”

The U.S. took an early lead just four minutes in, when centre-back Chris Richards nodded home a well-delivered free-kick from Sebastian Berhalter. His header struck the underside of the bar before crossing the line, sending the home crowd of nearly 71,000 into celebration.

But that would prove to be the high point for the Americans, who were second-best for much of the opening half.

Mexico nearly equalized through 16-year-old sensation Gilberto Mora in the 24th minute, but his curling effort was denied by U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese.

The breakthrough came moments later, as Marcel Ruiz unlocked the American defence with a precise through ball to veteran forward Raúl Jiménez, who rifled a shot into the roof of the net to level the score.

From there, Mexico continued to press and were ultimately rewarded with Álvarez’s late winner to cement their status as CONCACAF’s dominant force.
